Businesses with a remote workforce are now dealing with another operational challenge due to the pandemic – how to keep the business’ financials up-to-date when there is only one copy of the bookkeeping software and it’s located at the work office. If owners or bookkeepers can’t access this software, then they can’t stay on top of the necessary financial reporting that is vital to the health and longevity of the business.

Should You Switch to Bookkeeping on the Cloud?

As an accounting and bookkeeping specialist, I’ve encountered these issues before and recommend moving your business towards a cloud-based bookkeeping software platform for the following reasons:

Remote Access

Especially during a potential future lockdown, is imperative to keep the business operational. Cloud-based bookkeeping software means that any authorized personnel with a laptop can access the software at any time. Remote access also means there is no need to store information locally on a thumb drive or your personal computer, as the cloud keeps all the information stored and secured.

Less Costly and Time-Consuming Software Updates

Updating bookkeeping software used to be a costly and time-consuming aspect for most business owners. Now with cloud-based software, the software is updated when not in use and doesn’t cost extra to do so. The ability to move up or down tiers in a given software is very easy as well.

Subscription Payment Model Rather Than Buying for Each New Software Version

Although a bit more expensive than the traditional desktop versions, the cloud option is more than worth the cost in my opinion. Most of these types of systems are bought with a monthly or yearly subscription. However, with dedicated technical support teams to handle issues, problems are fewer and farther between for cloud-based bookkeeping platforms.
